Herodot

Herodot is a mobile travel app that turns sightseeing into a storytelling experience using AI. Instead of typing search queries, travelers point their camera at a landmark, artwork, or museum object, and the app identifies it and generates a spoken story about its history and context. Stories are delivered as audio in more than 20 languages, and users can pick from different narrator personas, including a professional historian, a local guide, or a kid-friendly companion, so the tone matches the traveler's mood or age group. The app also supports map-based exploration, letting users tap nearby points of interest to hear about them without needing to photograph anything first, and it remembers what a user has already explored so it can avoid repeating stories and instead surface related topics. Downloaded guides can be used offline, which is useful for travelers without reliable data access, and virtual museum tours let people explore some collections remotely. Herodot is aimed at independent travelers who want depth and flexibility instead of a fixed-route guided tour group. It is available on iOS and Android. One limitation is that its usefulness depends on how well its recognition and story database cover a given landmark, so coverage may be stronger in well-documented tourist destinations than in lesser-known locations.
