Scite

Scite is a research tool built around what it calls Smart Citations — a system that uses a deep-learning model to classify how one paper cites another, showing whether the citation supports, contradicts, or simply mentions the earlier work. This goes beyond a raw citation count: instead of just knowing a paper was cited 500 times, a researcher can see how many of those citations backed up the findings versus disputed them, which is useful for judging how well a claim has held up over time. Beyond citation classification, Scite includes a Reference Check tool that scans an uploaded manuscript's bibliography and flags cited works that have since been retracted or received editorial notices, an AI Assistant that answers research questions by pulling evidence from multiple papers and pointing out where the literature disagrees, and a Report feature that generates citation analysis documents for grant applications or systematic reviews. A browser extension connects Scite data into reference managers like Zotero, and the platform also offers API and MCP access for programmatic use. Its database spans over 1.6 billion Smart Citations across more than 300 million full-text articles, including some paywalled sources. Because its citation classifications are generated by an AI model rather than manual review, researchers relying on the supports/contrasts labels for high-stakes decisions should still read the underlying citing passage themselves.
