Our verdict on Omi
3.0/5 · 5 sources · reviewed August 2, 2026
Omi is a genuinely small, wearable AI recorder with a privacy-friendly local-first design and no forced subscription, but the software behind it is still rough. Reviewers who wore it day to day hit constant disconnect errors, a broken to-do list, and stretches where the app went dead for days. It's a reasonable pick for developers and early adopters who want an open, hackable platform and can tolerate bugs, but it is not yet the polished daily assistant its marketing promises.
What users praise
- The hardware itself draws praise for how small and unobtrusive it is — testers say it's barely noticeable worn as a pendant through a normal day.
- Reviewers like that it stores data locally and doesn't force a subscription — you can route it through your own AI API keys and keep control of ongoing costs, and it's open source enough that hobbyists can inspect exactly what it does with your audio.
- Despite an erratic battery percentage readout, actual runtime in daily use holds up well — testers who wore it through a full day still had charge left by night, matching or beating the advertised 10-14 hours.
What users complain about
- One of the most detailed long-term tests found the companion app unreliable day to day — constant false 'disconnected' and 'no internet' notifications, a to-do list that reverts completed items back to incomplete, a largely non-functional AI chat feature, and one stretch where the device went dead for four days with no way to recover it.
- One review that compared it against an enterprise alternative called it 'a dream for hackers' but a poor fit for daily professional use — it has no call recording, is only splash-resistant rather than fully waterproof, and getting the most out of it takes real coding knowledge.
- It can't pull in real-time information like weather or sports scores, a gap one reviewer flagged as a real limitation for anyone hoping to use it as a general-purpose assistant.
- The feature meant to set it apart — a temple-worn 'brain interface' that detects when you're talking to it without a wake word — has not been independently verified by any outlet we found; the publication that covered its launch said it could not test whether it actually works.
Not for: Anyone who needs a dependable daily assistant right out of the box, since long-term testers report frequent disconnects, a broken to-do list, and multi-day outages.
