Vectara

Vectara is an enterprise platform for building AI agents and conversational search applications on top of a company's own data. It combines large language models, vector search, and what the company calls "Grounded Generation" — a technique meant to keep responses tied to real source material and reduce hallucinated answers. Retrieval supports multimodal content, including text, tables, and images, and search blends semantic matching with exact keyword search for relevance. Originally launched from stealth in 2022 by the former CTO of Cloudera, Vectara has since repositioned as an "Enterprise Agent Platform," supporting deployment across SaaS, customer-managed VPC, or fully on-premises environments — a flexibility aimed at regulated industries like financial services, healthcare, and legal. Runtime policy enforcement and brand controls are built in, letting organizations constrain what an agent can say. The company reports customers achieving support-ticket deflection rates as high as 95% and querying knowledge bases at petabyte scale. The platform is API-first, with a console, documentation, and sample code, and offers a free tier to get started. As with any RAG-based system, output quality still depends heavily on how well the underlying data is indexed and maintained.
