Convex

Convex is an open-source, reactive backend platform where database queries are written as TypeScript functions that run inside the database itself, rather than as separate SQL statements or ORM calls. Like React components re-render when state changes, Convex queries automatically re-run and push updates to connected clients whenever the underlying data changes, giving apps live, real-time behavior without hand-rolled WebSocket code or a separate state-management library. Beyond the database, Convex bundles the pieces a full-stack app typically needs into one TypeScript-first stack: server functions, scheduled jobs (cron), file storage, search, and support for building AI agent workflows. Queries are automatically cached, and the platform manages consistency through ACID-compliant transactions, which the team highlights as important for preventing data corruption from concurrent writes, including writes triggered by AI agents. Convex integrates with Claude Code (via a plugin), Codex, and other AI coding assistants, aiming to reduce backend errors that agent-generated code can introduce. Convex was built by Jamie Turner and James Cowling, both formerly of Dropbox, and is used by companies including OpenAI, Tripadvisor, Solana, and Zapier. It offers SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance with role-based access control and SSO for enterprise customers; a VPC deployment option is listed as coming soon.
