## Overview
AI Meter is a small macOS utility that tracks how many tokens local AI coding agents consume and translates that usage into rough environmental terms, estimating the electricity and cooling water associated with the tokens measured. It reads usage data locally from Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, and Gemini CLI, and displays the results in a menu bar widget with adjustable calculation parameters, without requiring an account or sending data off the device.

It's aimed at individual developers and companies who want visibility into their AI coding tool consumption and its resource footprint without adopting a hosted analytics dashboard. The tool is free for both individuals and companies.

Because everything runs locally and no server-side component is described, there is no API and no cross-platform support: it is macOS-only, so developers on Windows or Linux cannot use it. The environmental estimates are also necessarily approximate, since they are calculated from token counts using adjustable assumptions rather than measured energy draw from any specific AI provider's infrastructure, and the tool does not claim otherwise on its own site.
## Key Features
- Local token usage tracking
- Electricity and water impact estimates
- macOS menu bar widget
- Multi-provider support (Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, Gemini CLI)
- No account required

## Use Cases
- Track personal AI coding agent token spend
- Estimate the environmental cost of AI usage
- Compare usage across multiple coding agents
